Handbridge Flower Club
The Club meets at 1.45pm on the 3rd Thursday of each month, except August and December, in St Mary's Parish Hall, Handbridge, Formed 21 years ago, it is affiliated to NAFAS, the National Association of Flower Arrangers which was founded for the enjoyment of "Flowers Fun and Friendship."
Most of our meetings consist of a demonstration by a qualified NAFAS flower arranger. Not only do we learn a great deal about arranging flowers but many demonstrators are dedicated gardeners too, and introduce us to unusual plants along with many useful hints and growing tips. Their accompanying talk is interesting, informative and often hilarious. After the demonstration the arrangements are raffled.
Three times a year we have a competition for both Novice and Advanced entrants (purely voluntary!), judged by the demonstrator of the day, whose constructive comments are very helpful and encouraging. We end the afternoon with tea and biscuits and a chance to chat and get to know one another - we're a friendly lot! There is also a chance to browse our Bring & Buy stall (proceeds to charity) and the greetings card and flower requisite stalls.
Apart from our demonstration afternoons, we have social events such as our "Winter Warmer" (soup and dessert), and a summer strawberry tea (with Bring & Buy, cake and plant stalls and a mammoth raffle). We have an outing in May and in December we have a Christmas Lunch. Our A.G.M. in January is always well attended as it is preceded by a delicious buffet lunch!
In April 2013 we held a special charity event in the King's School theatre. Our demonstrator was Tan Strong, a celebrated National and International flower arranger, who chose "Colours" as her theme. She quickly endeared herself to the audience with her bubbly personality, her obvious love of flowers, her wit and artistry. The stage was transformed from sombre black to a riot of colour. Over £3,300 was raised, to be shared between the Hospice of the Good Shepherd, Hope House and Nightingale House.
These pictures show Tan with two of the many colourful arrangements which she created on the night.
Representatives of the three hospices were invited to our meeting on 20th June 2013 to receive the donations.
